Evaluation Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is a screen shot of the opening of our music video. In this shot we decided to use split screen, combining two different shots simultaneously to lay the foundation for our narrative. We used conventions in order to make our music video look realistic. This mainstream music video by Daniel Powter also uses split screen to evoke the feeling of distance which is similar to our narrative.

This screen shot shows how we develop media conventions by incorporating both colour and black and white shots alongside the use of split screen. We chose to use colour in the chorus, as opposed to black and white in the verses, to heighten the emotions and intensify the solemn mood. Therefore we not only used split screen to create distance and emotion in the editing process we also used colour.

In terms of challenging media conventions, usually music videos use lip syncing of the artist performing the song. However, we believe this is an unnecessary feature that simply makes music videos look 'cheesy.' We intend our music video to appear a mood piece that effectively encourages a reaction from the audience and we thought lip syncing would spoil this. Of course we do use our artist playing the piano to ensure that it looks like a music video.

In line with media conventions for our music video we have a strong narrative of distance that develops throughout the piece although it remains highly elusive. Despite the song having a slow tempo the music crescendos we use this to increase the pace of our shots. This again adds to the emotion and mood of the story.

In our research we have discovered that many magazine advertisement posters use half of the magazine page - landscape. We followed this convention ensuring that our photographs would fit this shape. We believe this works effectively and we are pleased with our poster.

Similarly to our music video, we decided to continue the combination of the use of black and white and colour with our print. The digipack and poster both feature black and white images with colour picked out, this challenges media conventions.

In order to add to the authenticity of our print we decided to design a simplistic production company logo. This is a regular element for advertisements to signify belonging to a brand.
